When I think of Anil Dash, I think of social engineering.

I think about how sociological concepts of convincing people to do certain things relate to the web.

If somebody asked you to go to a protest meeting or sign a petition, you probably would think twice before doing that, however it seems that people are very easy link to other blogs giving them the power vote of the link.

It seems that links are nothing at all, practically free, but then Google PR has ways to translate itself into influence and essentially gains real (monetary) value.

At the beginning of Internet, when there was no Google yet, all the links were created equal. Added manually by people who had to type them or do some ftp work to export and update their bookmarks. One way or another adding a link costed XX in time of the person who posted it.

Then Google came into the picture and having high Google PR suddenly translated into making more money online. Advertisment agencies, who spammed for ages (paper-mail, newspaper, tv ads, etc.) turned to Internet. They said: lets produce "cheap" spam links at a fraction of a cost of "hand made" links and make money on that.

The problem for Google was that it couldn't distinguish between "cheap" spam links and "expensive" manual links, as the assumption of relatively equal cost of all links was build into the PageRank algorithm.

So google engineers worked hard to separate randomly generated spam from meaningful links and Google buisness people worked hard to negotiate with the big fish like Amazon or alike.

Then came the blogs. Blogs have genuine "hand made" content which passes all nesessary "random noise" and "theme consitency" checks at Google, combined with the extremely cheap price of a link. Plus most of the blog publishers create highly optimised blog templates that give bloggers the most "bang" of their content.

Regarless of what both Google and Bloggers say, Blogs for Google are serious pain in the index.

In addition to that blogger community is vulnerable to a "crowd syndrome" and influential blogs could easily swing certain searches creating problems for everyone.

Here is a SEO Guide by Philipp Lenssen and these are the official SEO Rules from Google.

It is interesting to note that Google SEO page comes #1 [google.com] for this highly competitive term. It is relatively easy for them to beat everyone else with the PR9 page linked from a couple of PR10 pages. Which leads us to the remarkable conclusion: to be #1 on Google you've got to get several PR10 sites to link to you! Or even better: PR100!

Most of the existing SEO Guides simply repeat Google preaching of "good webmasters should ..." and "you shall not spam" or give some abstract instuctions of what "you should do, theoretically speaking" in the general educational context. All that is not for real engineers! Real engineers never follow the guidelines or read textbooks!

Practical Google SEO for Real Engineers - Blogspot Edition!

This a short practical guide, which is not going to teach you not to spam. I am going to tell all you about spamming and you will determine appropriate risk levels. As a real engineer you was trained to do that!

Rule 1: Site should contain useful information and otherwise be convinient for users. Why? Because if you are too sucessful and your competitor files a spam report this will be the only ground for the report dismissal.

Rule 2: Site should contain something which will make user bookmark it or link to it. Why? Because if you are going to manually create all the backlinks or buy them it is going to cost your time and money. This is not a scalable solution. You've got to automate the process.

Rule 3: However, don't use the scripts to automate backlink generation or spamming blogspot guestbooks. Why? Google engineers have already figured out ways to detect it. PageRank return on autogenerated links approximates to log(log(n)) - this is not good - this is a waste of time and computational resources.

Rule 4: Create manual unique context around your links. Returns of PageRank from such links is almost linear. This is well spent time and server resources.

Rule 5: Don't use random phrases generator - google algorithms compare your text against everything else on the web and will throw it away if it is too random. You must get very sophisticated to harvest good content from other pages.

Rule 6: It might be tempting to use Google results to get relevant content for your topic along with the links to the top sites. But be very carefull: Google engineers insert spooky little things into the search results. While humans will simply ignore them, computers will understand them very well. If you are operating a large automated link farm and they spidered back some of the bait your site will get a visit from a human investigator. This will be the end of your listings at Google. Carefully compare probability of this event against the costs of moving to a new domain. If your operations are efficient you may find it profitable.

Rule 7: As you may have figured out from the previous rules you have to create good relevant content to wrap around your nigritude ultramarine links. However, resist the temptation to wrap a link around every nigritude ultramarine - too much optimisation is frowned upon by the ranking algorithms.

I disagree with his conclusions. Masses are wise only when nobody brainwashes them. Otherwise they are very easily manipulated.

Remarkably you don't have to have a bad intent to shift public opinion. Good example is Google itself. Look at most non competitive keywords. Majority of the links to "top 10" sites are there because people found those sites at Google and linked to them, without even bothering to check the second result page. New unknown sites find it very hard to find audience. Even if they have more relevant and fresh content than the old sites who stuck on the first page thanks to a bunch of ancient links.

I must say that the first month of my Blogging experience was very frustrating.

I was ready to abandon the whole thing. But then I found Blogger Time Machine!
